Adisi 2024: Documentary Screenings

CineBa! is celebrating the landmark achievement of 30 Years of South African Democracy by screening three short films which encapture South Africa’s post-apartheid democracy, followed by a dialogue with the invited filmmakers. The screenings are supported by the National Film and Video Foundation.

Filmmakers who will be attending include:

Phumi Morare, an NAACP Image Award-winning, Oscar-shortlisted writer/director from South Africa. She is passionate about redeeming the African and feminine identity in cinema. Her short films have played at international film festivals, including Telluride Film Festival, Clermont-Ferrand Film Festival, and the American Black Film Festival.

Enver Samuel, a freelance producer/director at EMS Productions, a Television Journalism/Production Lecturer at the Institute for the Advancement of Journalism (IAJ). In addition to being a member of the Film and Publication Board (FPB) from 1998 – 2014, Enver served on The National Film & Video Foundation’s (NFVF) training and bursary committee and is currently on the documentary panel of the NFVF.

CineBa! director Tshiamo Malatji promises an engaging line-up of films relevant for Bloemfontein’s youth audience. CineBa! aims to build a community around its film club Free State province, which will highlight local filmmakers and stories. The Adisi Screenings will be hosted at the recently-renovated 56 Tambo, where members of the Bloemfontein public are invited to attend.

Bones of Memory tells the story of Ntombi Khubeka, an anti-apartheid activist and member of the armed wing of the banned African National Congress (ANC), Umkhonto weSizwe (MK). In 1987, she was kidnapped and killed. We follow her daugher, Thuli who grapples with the legacy of her mother and how difficult life has been for her without a mother figure.

Lakutshon’ Ilanga is the story of a young Black nurse in 1985 apartheid South Africa, who must face her worst fears when she learns that her activist, younger brother may be in danger when he doesn’t return after school.

#WeTheVoters sheds light on and explores the diverse voices and stories of voters across South Africa, highlighting the significance of our role in shaping our nation’s future
